Here's another Tales From 2+2 post, this one is a bit longer but well worth the read. It follows the story of an online poker player posting on the 2+2 online poker forums and that takes him on the ride of a lifetime. I have made some light edits so it's easier to understand for non poker players, my explanations are within [these brackets]. If you want to understand how to play the poker watch this 3 minute how to play poker video.

Still Booming

The year is 2010.
The effects of the 2003 poker boom are still being felt and Black Friday [Black Friday is when online poker was forced to shut down in the USA, it hit the industry hard] is a year away.
Americans, Europeans, Australians and almost the whole world are playing side by side on Pokerstars and Full Tilt [The two biggest online sites at the time]. Hundreds of people are signing up for poker sites each day. Tournament guarantees are at an all-time high. Poker sites’ pockets are overflowing and sites are offering generous bonuses and promotions. Poker TV is popular worldwide and Poker After Dark just entered its 6th season. The 2+2 poker forums are in full swing, it’s the epicenter of poker communication. Dozens of threads are made on popular subforums like NVG (News, Views and Gossip) or BBV (Beats, Brags and Variance) every day.
BBV is a subforum of 2+2 where the moderation is far laxer than the rest of the 2+2. People often create posts showing off their tournament wins or lamenting huge downswings. After the initial post is made, the trolls would descend and replies like this were often seen:
Colin_Piddle: Ur a clown OP
Tank Home & Away: Somebody call Donald Trump. OP thinks online poker is rigged.
FranFran: Shut up. Idiot.
Dave Coulier: LOLLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL OLLOLOLOLOLOLOL

The BBV Post

On 20th Feb 2010 Jared Huggins, posting under RelaxedPrecision, visits BBV to vent his frustration over busting his meager roll playing 100nl HU:
RelaxedPrecision: Beat: HU vs drooler, lost my $100 bankroll ($100 table obv.)
He raised preflop every single hand including out of position.
Called 75% of my three bets with trash.
Only pot bet, regardless of board, his holdings, or position.
He is -$1132 in 2000 hands, -33/bb 100
We played 250 hands.
This guy was a corpse and I ran so cold it was insane. Only hitting any pair or a decent draw a couple of times. Twilight zone.
Brag: Not homeless again till the end of the month. Getting a third job today. This week I've begged for food at fast food joints and have scored two steak tacos and 1 piece of chicken.
[Jared is complaining that he lost the last of his poker bankroll, $100] The usual procedure in BBV is for the BBV regulars to berate the original poster, usually in meme form. Jared’s thread is no exception:
Sobad87: FAIIIIIIL, homeless shelters exist for a reason.
SmilingOrange: rock bottom itt
Sump: in b4 homeless
However, the thread takes a darker turn when Jared starts to post more details about his living and financial situation.
RelaxedPrecision: I'm 5 peanuts and 2 cups of water into my day. Finding some awesome links about food for broke people in LA. RelaxedPrecision: Last time round, 6 month period, I chose cruising the back streets near my job/sleeping in car, rather than driving hours per day to/from shelter and risking jail/car impoundaments/belongings confiscated.
Jared seems to be not only in dire poverty but also grinding microstakes [microstakes in poker is buying in for $2-10 dollars] for any cash he can get. He posts that the roll he lost was from a referral payment on a poker website but he cant’t withdraw it. The posters start to get a little more sympathetic:
FastPlaySlow: Wow. I feel bad for ya OP.
Kidlover: Keep your head up bro. Gimme a call if you want
A user named Airwave16 offers helps in his own way:
airwave16: create youtube vid of you dancing to around the world by daft punk in your boxers with a large sign that says "i love burningbend" and i'll ship you $30
Within 40 minutes Jared accepts this:
RelaxedPrecision: Never thought I'd do something like this, but I don't have much choice.
RelaxedPrecision: Don't want to go back to living in my car. Last month some guys tried to break into my car while I was inside of it. Terrible experience.
The next day, to the surprise of many he posts a video on Youtube of him around his room, just as Airwave16 asked. Unfortunately the video is lost to time but this small photo of the video remains. 2+2 posters start to show more compassion when they see how desperate Jared is for money:
mcfals02: Hilarious video. Hope you run good at life soon OP.
shikari424: If you've got a ftp [Full Tilt Poker,] account i'll ship something over bro[money could be sent between accounts], made me laugh
Ccuster_911 then offers a little more money for another challenge:
Ccuster_911 : Make a video of you going outside on the streets in LA offering people free HUGs(holding a sign ldo), I will ship you 30$, I want at least 10 random people being hugged
Others start to offer extra money to shoot this video:
cds0699: I'll chip in $10 for this.
Greeson08: $20 more here...$30 more if you paint yourself green before doing the hug thing.
Jared is very thankful for the support and lets his fellow posters know:
RelaxedPrecision: I'm really overwhelmed and surprised. Thank you guys so much, you have no idea how good it feels that people on 2+2 would reach out to me like this. I'm totally blown away. Thank you so much. This is one of the best things that has happened to me in a very long time.
Talked to the lady who rented me this room for 2 weeks. I got 5 days left here, then I'm back living in my car.
I am going to do everything in my power to get back on my feet. I am so close. Every suggestion, I will do. I'll dance for penny. I'll come to your house and clean your toilet. That's where my mind is at
A user asks for him to take a photo with ‘Free Pageh’ on his head, he posts this
swd805: that pic is disturbing
RelaxedPrecision: Mission accomplished.
Jared gives an insight into his mood while performing these tasks
RelaxedPrecision: Please do laugh at me. I laugh at myself as much as possible.
I cried twice. 1st when Airwave propositioned me and I felt different inside, like "time to get desperate man". It was a nasty feeling.
2nd time I cried, when I finished the video & began to ask myself whether or not I would do various things for $ & heard some of the answers in my head.
Both times I fought the tears back & realized I got no choice, need the $. So let's get some more ideas & keep this ball rolling. You guys are helping me, thank you
He also gives insight into his poor mental state and reveals that a 2+2 poster gave him a small stake [someone will send Jared money to play and Jared will split the profits]:
RelaxedPrecision: My friend (who's house I crashed at) is a pro MMA fighter , he lets me attend his MMA/BJJ class once a week. At class today, he yelled at me for doing a takedown wrong. I had a meltdown & broke down in tears in front of the class cuz I've barely eaten in 6 days. Shed 12 pounds this week. Just real drained.
Prop update: Got staked to play $5 Sit n Go's [a one table tournament] on FTP. 5 hours of play, up a few bucks.
4 days till I'm homeless again.
Jared tells a story and hatches a plan while working at his new job:
RelaxedPrecision: Today, this big husky girl with linebacker shoulders came in2 my job today to buy shoes...size 11. She looks exactly like a man. She had this big lady with her who told me the size 11 girl liked me. So I gave her my digits. I hope she calls me soon. If she calls me I'm going to try & seduce her & go live with her. Wherever she lives, I'm sure there's plenty of food.
Over the next few hundred posts the mood of the thread becomes caring and many people are asking Jared about his current lifestyle. He tells the thread about his struggles with permanent housing, a bad back, hunger and employment. He posts photos of his car (where he sleeps) and a video of him dancing at work. Jared reveals intimate parts of himself and his passion for writing and music. He also posts that he has encountered problems with substance abuse and has been sober for a while. The trickle of small donations from posters becomes a steady flow:
JeReMyHaSSpoKen: pm me western union or paypal And ill ship you some cash
Greeson08: Jared, hit me up on Skype. Sending $11.11 via FTP.
A month after Jared creates the BBV thread, March 9th, Jared posts the long awaited video of him hugging strangers that Ccuster_911 requested. Luckily, the video is still on YouTube. Here is the link. At this point he fittingly reveals his name is Jared Huggins and his nickname in school was Huggy. His fans love the video and let him know:
Doomriders: amazing nice job brothaa
cds0699: Very amazing vid and I wish you nothing but the best
Talking Poker: Video is awesome. Thread is awesome. You are awesome.
And he really enjoyed the experience:
RelaxedPrecision: I was surprised by the number of people who literally RAN into my arms.
It was a day & an experience that I will never forget.
If you enjoy the video half as much as I enjoyed making it, I'll be happy.
He tells 2+2 more about his life:
RelaxedPrecision: You guys reaching out to me is very much appreciated. I've had my fair share of obstacles in life. Born in a crack house, father died when I was 9, mother is an alcoholic, one brother a heroine addict, the other a crack dealer who was beaten and left for dead and never fully recovered his mind.
Last year ran bad at life...lost my job, ripped my meniscus in two places, had a terrible reaction to prescription stress meds..etc etc. I ended up living in my calosing contact with my family... cuz my cousin is hooked on muscle relaxers & vicodin and it hurts too much to watch people I love hurt themselves. We all have challenges, and obstacles. Life is tough for everybody.
I'm healthy, normal, moving in a positive direction
Jared’s birthday comes on the 12th of March and many posters wish him a happy birthday. At this point the donations from 2+2 posters continue and totals $1k. A few weeks later and Jared posts an amusing and NSFW story about living in a car. It’s long and not essential to the story so I won’t quote it. Read it here.
Jared thanks the community again:
RelaxedPrecision: I've never had people care about me like this before, let alone strangers.
From the bottom of my heart I would like to thank all of you.

The Big Game

Poker TV was very popular in 2010. The WSOP and other TV shows were broadcast across America and other countries. Pokersites were very keen on poker advertising appearing on TV, it was a very effective way to promote online poker sites. Full Tilt sponsored and regularly advertised on Poker After Dark. Full Tilt is even included in the show's title, which for a time prompted players associated with Pokerstars to stop appearing on the show. Pokerstars did not have as big a presence on TV as Full Tilt and they wanted to change that. How better than creating their own show? They would be able to have a majority of Pokerstars pros on TV and have players wearing their advertising patches.
Thus, Pokerstars created The Big Game. The Big Game was a televised cash game [a cash game is different to a tournament, the players' chips represent cash explained more here] with a novel concept: each episode featured a loose cannon. The loose cannon is a recreational player, who is given $100k to play 150 hands of high stakes poker. The loose cannon gets to keep any profits from their session and the biggest winner from the season also gets $50k in NAPT tournament entrance costs. Any Pokerstars player is welcome to try to become the Loose Cannon.
The line ups consisted of some popular pros who have a lively table presence like Daniel Negreanu, Phil Hellmuth and Tony G. It also had some of the strongest players of the time like Ike Haxton and Phil Galfond. Joe Stapleton made his debut on the show as an announcer. He who would go on to do a great deal of poker commentating over the next decade. Each episode aired on The Fox Network and Pokerstars.tv.
In the same BBV thread Jared started, one of the posters has a bright idea:
MasterWolf: I think you should apply to be a Loose Cannon on the Big Game. I know you'd get tons of 2+2 support, plus, you are awesome at making videos.
One of the Jared’s strongest supporters on 2+2 takes a keen interest in this idea:
John_Wray: THIS! Is this something we can make happen? I don't know anything about the process.
Others agree:
Rusemandingo: Would be amazing.
AyinHara: for the producers of the Big Game, this is an easy one. snap it up!
King Fish: PokerStars Steve was looking for 2p2 recommendations awhile ago. I sent him a text nominating OP but have not heard back. I suggest all of you PM him, and point him to this thread. Would make a much better story than anyone on here, and he has the video to back up both the story and personality already shot.
But how can Jared apply to go on The Big Game?
Pokerstars run several tournament qualifiers for The Big Game on Pokerstars. These are details taken from The Big Game website:
There are free-to-enter Big Game Round 1 satellites running four times a day. Finish in the top 300 and you’ll advance to Round 2. Make it into the top 1,000 in a Round 2 tournament and you’ll get a seat in the Big Game Final Round qualifier. All players that finish in the top 200 in the final will be invited to send PokerStars a casting video, telling us why you think you should be on TV’s best new cash game show. Impress us with your video and you’ll be heading off to Las Vegas to star on the show as a Loose Cannon qualifier. Once the video is posted, people will vote on the their favourite video.
The freerolls are popular and attract about 5000 people for each round 1 freeroll. Jared would need to finish in the top 6% of the round 1 freeroll then he’ll be in the round 2 freeroll, he would need to finish in the top 15% to qualify for round 3. In round 3, only 200 qualify to make a video. The round 2 and 3 qualifier only ran once a week so Jared had a limited amount of attempts.
John_Wray starts a new thread in support of Jared being considered to be a loose cannon on The Big Game. Within 24 hours the thread has over 400 posts, most of them people putting down their support for Jared to be on The Big Game.
Boosted J hears of Jared’s story and posts in the petition thread. Boosted J is the screen name of Justin Smith, a skilled professional player. Boosted J offers Jared a potential job, poker coaching and access to his private mental coach. Boosted J would go on to get Jared in a Dr Dre video as an extra.
At this point RelaxedPrecision is one year sober and life is looking good for him. He posts a video rapping about overcoming life’s obstacles. Daniel Negreanu notices and tweets about his rap:
RealKidPoker: Homeless guy Jared Huggins rapping about being sober 1 year, powerful lyrics. Guy has an amazing story to tell.
John_Wray reports that Jared has already started playing the freeroll qualifiers [a freeroll is a free to enter tournament]:
John_Wray: Jared's in a hotel tonight grinding the freerolls .
Jared is ready to play all four round 1 qualifiers on days he had free:
RelaxedPrecision: Going to grind as many of these things as humanly possible.
RelaxedPrecision: I got out my schedule for the month, there will be for sure be days coming up where I will play all 4 first round games.
Support pours in:
CrazyNL: awsome man gl
NomoneyHU: I'd like to wish you good luck man , i'm currently watching your video. Happy that things is going your way from now! I hope that you do qualify for the PS Big Game and ship all the manies.
Sump: I hope you win this and double up on Big Game, ship the NAPT Passport
People start to watch him play and offer him advice. Jared found the journey hard at times:
RelaxedPrecision: Watched guys ship all in preflop with 72o for 4 hours straight. I get an above average stack, get it in with 10 10, run it smack dab into KK. And encountered his fair share of bad beats: RelaxedPrecision: Survive that, get it in with. 58 on a 8s7h6d flop vs Js7s, turn and river are spades, and it's time for a cold shower. lol
[Here he is saying that he feels the other players in the tournament are not playing well but he feels when he played well he felt he was unlucky]
Jared starts a new day of round 1 qualifiers, ready to play all 4.
RelaxedPrecision: Fresh day of freerolls starts in 20 minutes. Playing more aggressive today. Feeling optimistic.
He starts playing a round 1 tournament qualifier and is doing well. He’s getting closer:
pokernutssss: 322/379! 79 to go GL jared
John_Wray: just fold into the win now. you've got enough chips
Until:
MicroRoller: Congrats! 1 down 2 to go.
RelaxedPrecision: YEEEEEEEEEEHAW!!!
Feels good to be out of round 1. Just gotta find a way to run good [getting lucky]!
The next day, Jared enters round 2 and plays this hand in the middle stages:
Poker Stars Freeroll No Limit Hold'em Tournament - t500/t1000 Blinds + t250 - 9 players

RelaxedPrecision: **** yeah
But then falls:
John_Wray: ugh. You played great though.
After Jared asks about poker training sites, Taylor Caby pops into the thread to offer Jared membership to his training site: CardRunners:
Green Plastic: Hey Jared,
if you'd like to try out CardRunners for free shoot me a PM, I'll have someone set you up over there.
After making a few deep runs in the round 1 tournaments, Jared has several round 2 tickets and is putting his newly found membership to good use:
RelaxedPrecision: Won 3/4 round 1 tournaments today. Now I have four round 2 Tokens saved. Watching Cardrunner.com videos all day tommorrow, and grinding more freerolls
A few days later and Jared makes the final round of freerolls:
Amnestia: gg, jared, good luck in round 3 Isitdur?: It would be the sickest rags to riches story ever if you got on The Big Game, Jared. I really hope you do it. Good luck in Round 3 I will be railing along with all of your other supporters!
Jared registers and plays a round three qualifier tournament and encounters this hand:
Preflop: Jared Huggins in MP1 with AcKc
UTG bets t1200, Jared Huggins raises to t3000, 1 fold, MP2 calls t3000, MP3 calls t3000, 4 folds, UTG calls t1800

Jared Huggins bets t25000, MP2 raises to t26050 (All-In), Jared Huggins calls t1050
River: (t88300) 4d (3 players, 2 all-in)
Total pot: t88300
Results: Jared Huggins shows AcKc (two pair, Aces and Kings). MP2 shows Js9s (flush, Ace high). MP3 shows KdTs (one pair, Kings). Outcome: MP2 won t88300 [Jared plays well but get unlucky in a large pot and is out of this round 2 tournament]
Jared is out and continues to grind the qualifying tournaments. A week later and he registers for a round three freeroll and is going deep. A fan posts his position:
MasterWolf: Current Stats: 81,262 chips. avg: 142,959. position 247 / 348. Top 200 get in
Jared gets closer…
MasterWolf: 44 left. he's got 7th shortest stack in tourney. BUT HE CAN DO IT! Go Jared!!
Jared wins a key pot:
John_Wray: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
NomoneyHU: SSHHHHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP PPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jared gets increasingly close but is very shortstacked [doesn't have many chips]:
The railbirds [players who watch online poker] watch on:
__27__: Never been so happy railing [watching] a freeroll, this is some crazy ****.
Hard bubble and the tournament goes hand for hand [this means there is only 1 player left to go out, when they do all remaining players qualify for the video round]:
MasterWolf: 1 person left
Jared posts. He has qualified!
RelaxedPrecision: I can't believe this is actually happening.
Jared has done it. With the full support of his fan base Jared is one big step closer to getting onto The Big Game. The posters go crazy in his sweat thread and dozens of people congratulate him.
Afterwards, Pokerstatic interview Jared and he opens up about his difficult upbringing and life. Link to summary here.
Jared is very popular on 2+2 and has a keen fan base but not everyone likes the attention and donations Jared is getting. Later on a Jared opposition thread would be created. Here’s an example of opposition towards Jared:
Lchampag: Its just the way everyone here is completely giving this story all their faith. Just reminds me of those old people that get scammed is all.
I work in the coal mining industry. Pay starts out at around $20/h for the first six months(for"red hats") and then goes to around 25 after that for a general laborer. There are men hired at my mines everyday, come and get a freaking job! I guess this work is too hard for those that would just rather get handouts...
Some people were upset he was getting so much in donations. In 2010 he received $6k from 2+2 members. Jared’s fans respond with posts like this:
Srkbigdaddy: i dont know why people would bother posting in a thread that actually has a ton of heart with their snide and rude remarks. obviously its okay to post your feelings but if they are not gonna help the situation then they are pointless. you are basically just stepping on someone who is down
John Wray gives an update on Jared and his health:
John Wray: Jared is seeing his therapist again, and has just moved into a new place. He's very happy with it as it is within his price range and his landlord is a former deacon. They plan to attend services together on Sundays.
His bad back is still a big problem, one that needs to be addressed immediately.
Grayson Physioc also known as Spacegravy on 2+2 is a SNG [Sit 'n' Go, a one table tournament] crusher who fought his way from from microstakes to highstakes [A common story for skilled players to deposit $100 on a pokersite, fight their way up the ranks and turn it into millions]. He arrives in the thread and offers to fly Jared to Maimi and coach him, Jared flies out and posts this from Miami:
RelaxedPrecision: Spacegravy flew me out here to Miami to learn Sit N Go's, I'm totally blown away! He is an A+ human being! Haven't gone to the beach, haven't gone sight-seeing, haven't gone anywhere, just straight up grinding poker. Grinding as much as possible!
While in Miami, Jared’s mind is on making the best video he can to ensure he gets onto The Big Game. John_Wray helped, by the 28th of October it is finished and posted.
Jared’s Big Game Audition Tape
November the first rolls by and the audition tapes of all the qualifiers are uploaded and ready to be voted on. Jared is looking good and is in second place with 1.1k votes.
2nd November and Jared returns from Miami. He’s up $800 on SNGs from his time playing and getting mentored by SpaceGravy.
The weeks pass by. People can vote on one video per day so Jared’s fans are visiting and voting as much as they can:
8Nilor: Voting everyday btw. and got others to also.
The thread builds with excitement. With so many fans in the poker world Jared is sure to be selected to go on The Big Game. In December, Jared posts that all is going well with him. He has two jobs and a room to stay in. Jared gives a few updates:
RelaxedPrecision: When I'm not at work, I am working on my game everyday, grinding 50NL 6 max deep on Stars, going over hand histories, and getting coaching when I can.
[50nl deep is a type of poker played with 6 maximum players on the table buying in for $50-100]
2011 begins. In January the voting closes and Jared can only wait.
And then the news that Jared and many 2+2 posters have been waiting for is here. Jared notices an email from Pokerstars. He reads the news from Pokerstars about The Big Game.
He receives the results and rushes to 2+2 to share the news:
RelaxedPrecision: I got an email from PokerStars informing me that I was not selected to compete as a Loose Cannon on next season’s PokerStars Big Game. I wasn’t given any specific reason why I wasn’t selected, but I was thanked for trying out.
TwoPlusTwo.com, thank all of you for supporting me and showing me love. To be loved was a dream come true for me. I'm convinced that love cures most illness.
Jared was not successful. It's crushing news to the community. All their efforts spent helping Jared onto The Big Game was for nothing.
The community reply to the news:
AlienSpaceBat: Wow, Jared, I'm really sorry to hear this
Isitdur?: So bummed to hear this news, Jared.
2ndUnit: I am very, very disappointed of this decision by PS. Don't let it bring you down Jared, keep going.
A few weeks pass and there’s not much news from Jared. He settles back into working and improving his situation.

It’s all over

Jared had not made the cut for The Big Game.
But it’s not all bad.
Jared is in a much better position than he was a year ago.
He has a roof over his head and steady employment.
The past year was a crazy ride for him and he’s made many friends from 2+2.
His poker skill is improving and he has top players coaching him.
But no one predicted what would happen next month.
In the middle of February 2011, a Pokerstars representative dropped into 2+2 to post unbelievable news:
PokerstarsSteve: The seven Loose Cannons scheduled for the July 2011 showing of The PokerStars.net Big Game are:
Gonzales Cannon II - Sacramento, CA
Courtney Gee - Vancouver BC
Jared Huggins - Los Angeles, CA
Massimiliano Martinez - Rome, Italy
Cari Bershell - Las Vegas, NV
Kenneth Hrankowski - Vancouver BC
Anton Dunyushkin - Moscow, Russia
Jared Huggins is confirmed to appear on The Big Game Season 2. This is shocking to the community because there was no knowledge on 2+2 that he was even considered for season 2. The community erupts:
ak47: YESSSSSSSSSSSSS!
ROADHEAD: WOW NO WAY, WHAT THE HECK JUST HAPPENED!!
MrPowell222: WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOO!
TayWolf55: GO GO GO GO GO Jared!
Almost exactly a year after living in his car and making his BBV thread he has the shot of a lifetime for fame and fortune.
But first, Jared needs to prepare for the biggest shot of his life.
Jared dedicates four months to preparation for going on The Big Game. He plays as much online cash game poker as he can. He has access to a training site and receives free coaching from top pros. To simulate The Big Game he plays 50,000 hands of 6max deep online [6max deep is the poker format played on The Big Game] and even plays tough opponents who would drop down in stakes to play with him.
In 2011 he makes three trips from LA to Las Vegas to practice and get used to live play. He practices chip handling, breathing and getting comfortable going from online to live. He reads Caro’s Books of Tells and would sit at the lowest stakes while studying every player closely. He never parties on these trips, just play and study.
He watches all 72 episodes of The Big Game Season 1 and analyzes every hand. While watching he would have seen Season 1’s biggest winner, Bob Ferdinand, win $181,500 and $50k in NAPT tournament entries.
In this time Jared remakes his Free Hugs video and once again, wanders LA shores with a sign and offers free hugs to the public. Jared uses some of the money from this video and donates $1k to charity. Reshot video here
The line up for The Big Game is announced:
Seat 1: Jared Huggins
Seat 2: Nick Cassavetes – A recreational player. Cassavetes works in the film industry.
Seat 3: Barry Greenstein – Poker legend known for his ‎Philanthropy
Seat 4: Vanessa Selbst – An aggressive and skilled player. Won NAPT Mohegan Sun Main Event back to back.
Seat 5: Antonio Esfandiari – An accomplished player who would go on to win The Big Drop for $18m next year.
Seat 6: Prahlad Friedman – An experienced cash game player. Played under Spirit Rock and used to crush online games
Reserve: Phil Lakk - An entertaining professional player.
There are certainly some tough opponents on this table. Fortunately, Jared has a recreational player on his left [at the poker table players on the left are more likely to apply pressure than players on the right. Because Cassavetes is a recreational player he should be applying less pressure on Jared than a pro].
The community reacts:

Epilogue

Jared did not end up profiting on the episode. He played until hand 126 of 150 when he ran his QQ into Cassavetes’ KK. Jared doesn’t hit and is off The Big Game.[KK is the second best hand in poker and QQ is the third best, so it was unlucky for Jared to get QQ and another player has KK. However, Jared was playing poorly and too passively in other hands in the episodes]
Posts from 2+2 were mixed, many posts in the thread were not kind towards his play. The community criticized some of the hands he played:
Jazzed23: the dude played like crap. No 3 betting, no bluffing, no floating and turn barrelling. he was playing scared and tight. Blew away $25k just by folding.
cobrastatus: How could this guy... get so much free coaching... and be so terrible...
trip_kings12: what a waste of a week for this show. Jared, the loose cannon, was almost unbearable to watch. I doubt I've ever seen a tighter, more scared loose cannon in all my years in poker.
[The posters here are saying that he was playing poorly and passively]
One fan posts this:
LolDonkamentz: I'll admit I was kind of disappointed with the result of this. I enjoyed all the build up and was really excited for this to be the climax of the Jared Huggins saga but it wasn't to be. His awkwardness at the table combined with his below average performance made for bad television
And Jared replied:
RelaxedPrecision: To you and others Donkamentz, sorry if I wasn't able to do my part to entertain you. It's a big show with lots of people on it, so I don't feel solely responsible for your entertainment, any more than I feel responsible for not hitting a huge hand. Thank you for caring about how I did.
Most of the posts were neutral or negative but there were still some positive posts:
kevmode: Gl to you in the future Jared. You are a nice guy, just block out the negative and think positive.
So, what happened to Jared after The Big Game?
After The Big Game, Jared stopped posting so much in 2+2 and he slowly faded from posters’ minds.
Shortly after The Big Game, he posted a post show reflection where he thanked the community, he spoke of how he enjoyed playing with the pros and his heartbreak after busting. He wished he had talked more and played some hands differently. He finishes with a final thought:
RelaxedPrecision: I'm happy and grateful for what this journey has been. I made some amazing friendships, saw amazing places, and had my dreams come true. I had amazing experiences, that I will never in my life forget, memories that I will always look back upon with a smile.
In 2012 he posted this post where he shared his battles with health conditions and how he still plays poker.
In 2016 he posted this in a thread about poker in developing countries. He wrote about living in China for 9 months.

Here's another Tales From 2+2 post, this one is a bit longer and features some videos. I hope it's worth the read. This story follows several epic 2+2 threads and takes a rollercoaster ride. If you want to pass this story onto a non poker player I wrote an edited version on HobbyDrama. Enjoy:

Still Booming

The year is 2010.
The effects of the 2003 poker boom are still being felt and Black Friday is a year away.
Americans, Europeans, Australians and almost the whole world are playing side by side on Pokerstars and Full Tilt. Hundreds of people are signing up for poker sites each day. Tournament guarantees are at an all-time high. Poker sites’ pockets are overflowing and sites are offering generous bonuses, promotions and rakeback.
People often create posts showing off their tournament wins, lamenting their 50 buy in downswings or venting their frustration over the local fish hitting their gutshot on the river.

The usual procedure in BBV is for the BBV regulars to berate the original poster, usually in meme form.
Jared seems to be not only in dire poverty but also grinding microstakes for any cash he can get.
Hope you run good at life soon OP.
shikari424: If you've got a ftp account i'll ship something over bro, made me laugh
You guys are helping me, thank you
He also gives insight into his poor mental state and reveals that a 2+2 poster gave him a small stake:
RelaxedPrecision: My friend (who's house I crashed at) is a pro MMA fighter , he lets me attend his MMA/BJJ class once a week. At class today, he yelled at me for doing a takedown wrong. I had a meltdown & broke down in tears in front of the class cuz I've barely eaten in 6 days. Shed 12 pounds this week. Just real drained.
Prop update: Got staked to play $5 Sit n Go's on FTP.

The Big Game was a televised 6 max cash game with a novel concept: each episode featured a loose cannon. The loose cannon is a recreational player, who is given $100k to play 150 hands of $200/400 NLHE with a $600 button ante.
Something which separated The Big Game from other poker shows was that it was the first poker show to go into the stats and look at numbers such as VPIP and PFR. Another difference is that it’s played pot limit pre flop to prevent loose cannon shenanigans such as shoving every hand if they are short stacked around hand 140.
John_Wray reports that Jared has already started the grind:
John_Wray: Jared's in a hotel tonight grinding the freerolls.
People start to watch him play, offer him advice and sweat his every flip. Here's a hand he plays from a round 1 tournament. Given that it’s a freeroll in 2010 some of the play is questionable:
Poker Stars Freeroll No Limit Hold'em Tournament – t300/t600 Blinds + t150 - 9 players

Jared found it hard at times:
RelaxedPrecision: Watched guys ship all in preflop with 72o for 4 hours straight. I get an above average stack, get it in with 10 10, run it smack dab into KK. And encountered his fair share of bad beats: RelaxedPrecision: Survive that, get it in with. 58 on a 8s7h6d flop vs Js7s, turn and river are spades, and it's time for a cold shower. lol
John_Wray: just fold into the win now. you've got enough chips for 5 orbits
Until:
MicroRoller: Congrats! 1 down 2 to go.

RelaxedPrecision: **** yeah
But then falls:
John_Wray: ugh. You played great though. Got it in with the best hand and a double-up would have put you in a good position to qualify.

Jared is out and continues to grind the qualifying tournaments. A week later and he registers for a round three freeroll and is going deep. A fan posts his position:
MasterWolf: Current Stats: 81,262 chips. avg: 142,959. position 247 / 348. Top 200 get in
Jared gets closer…
MasterWolf: 44 left. he's got 7th shortest stack in tourney. BUT HE CAN DO IT! Go Jared!!
Jared wins a key pot:
John_Wray: BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
NomoneyHU: SSHHHHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP PPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jared gets increasingly close but is very shortstacked:
John_Wray: The starting pot is now significantly bigger than his chip stack. A walk actually doubles him up!
The railbirds watch on:
__27__: Never been so happy railing a freeroll, this is some crazy ****.
Hard bubble and the tournament goes hand for hand:
MasterWolf: 1 person left, h2h
Grayson Physioc also known as Spacegravy on 2+2 is a SNG crusher who fought his way from from microstakes to highstakes.
Grinding as many of these $3/$6 45 mans on Stars as possible!

To simulate The Big Game he plays 50,000 hands of 6max deep online and even plays tough opponents who would drop down in stakes to play with him.
Fortunately, Jared has a recreational player on his left.
The community reacts:
blackjacki2: hard lineup
J0hny: Best of luck to you !
Then the day of filming arrives. Jared drives to Las Vegas to play in the biggest cash game of his life. He’s had months of training for this one moment. Hundreds of people on 2+2 are following his progress and Jared will soon be broadcast across the USA playing with seasoned professionals.

Epilogue

Jared did not end up profiting on the episode. He played until hand 126 of 150 when he ran his QQ into Cassavetes’ KK. They run it twice and Jared doesn’t hit.
Posts from 2+2 were mixed, many posts in the sweat thread were not kind towards his play.

Reaching out... desperately need some help.. toxic masc

Hey, normally I wouldn’t be one to post something like this, but I really need some advice and help, and don't really have anyone with experience with this I can turn to (im feeling quite alien and like a bit of an anomoly). I’m a 27 male who came out to his close friends around 4 years ago, and out properly to the public 2 years ago. I was originally doing quite well with it when just my close friends knew, but recently I have been having a lot of regrets regarding coming out, and have been carrying a lot of self-loathing and shame, while expressing some serious toxic masculinity. Also, some of the things I might say from here out may come across as provocative, please understand I am very aware that this is entirely a 'me' issue and is bred from my own self disdain, and that’s what I’m desperately trying to seek help for. I’m “straight-acting”, love MMA and metal, can only see myself getting married with a female partner, and don’t fit the stereotypes (but I also love the dick). I initially came out because I wanted to be totally honest about everything with my future partner, and also wanted to have that part of myself accepted. I thought I would also be an advocate of change, break down stereotypes, while also potentially inspiring other bi dudes to come out themselves, because there is so many of us in the closet yo. These stereotypes lately have been crushing me. My attraction for women is disregarded and I’m assumed to be gay. It's assumed that I like effeminate things and am often treated differently now, and sometimes I feel pressured, and to my disdain and shame, have acted very differently to my true self to fit that stereotype, because at that moment it felt like at least my bisexuality was being acknowledged. It seems most girls find my bisexuality quite repulsive, and I find an immediate shift in their facial features when finding this out, and where just moments before I was sexually desirable, I’m now considered to not meet the societal interpretation of what is masculine, or they would never be able to satisfy me completely. Where I had great success on tinder, I changed my sexuality to bisexual, and from then on got literally nothing. Zero. Which was a real "oh fuck" moment... people are cool with you being bi but you are no longer good enough to be a partner. I’ve also recently ditched my job as an electrician and started studying to do mental health nursing, which I’m legit coming 3rd out of a cohort of 157 students in grades, which was awesome when I was straight, but now it feels like “oh yeah, you’re doing that cas ur gay”.
I have always been considered loving, accepting of everyone, jovial and wild guy, life of the party, big time extrovert, and someone who would die on the sword for his mates no problem. This recent negative perception regarding my bisexuality has been destroying me though, and I am starting to become incredibly resentful, hateful, and angry, which is not at all who I am as a person (at least for the past 10 years, when I was a young teenager I was always trying to prove my masculinity, getting into fights). I have always been supportive and loved all my brothers, sisters and non-conforming in the LGBTIQ+, now I’m showing some incredulous hatred towards effeminate men (this was never me in the past, and have had some great mates that were super flamboyant gay). Like a real sorta “because you get to be you, I can’t be me, and society treats me like this because of you”. Like its total bull shit and I know it’s wrong, but it’s how I feel when I'm worked up. I’ve started self-harming in fits of rage, beating myself senseless with my fists. I had a mate who is also bisexual make an off the cuff remark about me at a party saying how I bottom sometimes, which is no one’s fucking business (and lmaooo, I bet you can imagine how someone who is experiencing such distress about his masculinity feels about himself liking anal and prostate stimulation), and I felt like it was this super lame attempt to show his masculinity because he’s a top or some totally ridiculous shit, and he knows I don’t like people knowing that purely because of the stereotype that comes with it. I sternly warned him to never do that again, and begrudgingly let it go, but that moment has been like poison, and I’ve been having intense fantasies of how I should have beat the shit out of him, and going over it and over it and over it. Finally the other night, I went over to this absolutely gorgeous girls house who is totally cool about my sexuality, she is such an absolute babe and funny as hell, has been asking me to come hang out for over a month and is so into me, and I completely blew it. Though I use to get around a lot between 17 and 25, the past 2 years I’ve had like 2 one night stand and that is it due to a pretty rough break up. In that time I’ve been on grindr a lot (never hooking up, just kink chatting), and watched the majority of gay/trans porn. My past couple of relationships with women haven’t weren't the best, and was broken up with when I came out as bi because she "couldn't see me as sexually attractive anymore", so I know due to my own insecurity and feeling like I’ll get rejected, I’ve really used Grindr and gay/bi porn for instant gratification and as a cop-out from searching for a meaningful relationship (because again, with guys it’s purely sexual, with girls romantic. I actually don’t even like guys physicality that much, just like that dick, yeet). The end of the night came and we’ve been cuddling, and her, cute as hell, beautiful giant milky tiddies pressing into me as she cuddles me, invites me into her room and to stay the night. I have been stressed as hell regarding my sexuality and was just high strung… I was in my head about needing to perform, but yeah, I just could not get a boner. Had one when we were on the couch together, but yeah when it came to do the deed just nothing. I don’t know if it’s because I’ve just been watching gay porn ect, and have conditioned myself.. And I had the option to be like can we just cuddle I’m not feeling up for it, but was insecure about being insecure, felt like I needed to prove myself and she wouldn’t want to see me again if I didn’t, so just this awkward fucking eternity of not being able to get hard… she was super nice about it but it has destroyed me. I left when she fell asleep, as I was just staring into the god damn void which was the blackness of the ceiling. Being with someone like her, its like everything I’ve hoped for, but have I broken myself? I’ve never had this happen when sober.. (I was completely sober). I snapped when I left her house, and have beaten the absolutely hell out of myself, bashed my head in with a block of timber, can’t see out of one eye due to it being that swolen, I saw these random dudes on the street at 3am who I started screaming at insanely trying to instigate a fight, calling them faggots when they didn't comply (my go to word it seems lately when im angry to put myself down), drove home in a rage clocking 170kmph at some points screaming at the top of my lungs. Straight up if I owned a gun I would have with no hesitation offed myself when I got home. I tried desperately to find my old anti-depressants that I could mix with sleeping tablets and booze so I could just go to sleep, stop my heart and never wake up, but I just didn’t have enough.
But yeah that is my tragic tale, and I have no idea what to do. I need to learn to love myself for being bi, but I’m a very rational guy, and I can’t think of one thing positive about being a bi male as compared to the tidal wave of negatives that come with the territory, so I feel like to accept and love myself for it means to be delusional and accept false truths. I love and want to help people, but I’m becoming violent and angry, and undeservingly holding hatred, contempt and resentment for my fellow LGBT homies for being them-fucking-selves, which breaks my heart. I feel like even though I’m going to make a great psych nurse, how hypocritical of myself and how the hell can I hope to help people when I’m this bloody out of sorts. I feel like because of how insecure I am, and how I’m putting the pussy on a pedestal, I am not going to be able to fucking perform, and probably have blown my chance with a one off chick who adores all parts of myself. Have I broken myself and can’t perform with women now. Sorry for the absolute essay, and the complicated multitude of problems, but this has been a problem that has been building up for years, and I’m kind of at breaking point. I’m trying to organise to see my psychologist from way back, but it’s hard during Covid, and I feel uncomfortable doing online psych meetings. Any advice is appreciated/similar experiences/obstacles you have had to overcome. Sorry if I’ve come across as a brute, I’m really the opposite, I’m just having a really, really hard time. Peace, much love, and take care of yourselves.

Help me make a new version of God Hand Jump

I want help making a revised Godhand jump. This is My first jump design attempt
Unfortunately not a fighting game aficionado or martial artist. Or mma fan. I have some ideas already. Particularly rewards allowing chain discounts or benefits based on self imposed challenges or gains. Like maybe a kick me God hand run? maxes your body mod.
Anyway could use beta or pointers or just advice what another video game brawler besides generic stick fighters jump could do. How fit in meta or best model benefits of game or extend it to be viable for ten damn years?
Considerations/aims/inspiration
I would probably want to make it so that you could be a God Hander or a hero or drop in and even the demon but the way everything is priced and spread out you can't seem to imitate Gene at all because everything's so expensive and spread out between two different lines forcing you to get drawbacks and very strong restriction.
Lightbulb moment To be fair though I imagine there's a very easy hack to this jump seeing as almost everyone in God Hand fights with fists or melee and coming in with gun and sufficient ammunition or just a vehicle basically makes the level die a Breeze. there's no restriction after all for you coming in even from a previous jump with just scavenged let alone perk granted weaponry./lightbulb moment.
Still want to preserve or make plain what benefits and gains of perks like dodge cancelling from original versipn jump or game. Also more spelled out aloud charting for godhand's growth. after all it seems as if you don't buy certain items on the import document you can't gain certain benefits that you get throughout the game. Such as increase health, roulette orbs, new moves and of course the second God hand when you defeat Azazel and defeat angra.
So far
God hand my version beta
Perks Gamboling gambler- basically this s*** lets you into any place where people bet or Run games. No matter where from or anyting else you are acceptted and the house they running a pretty fair or generous (for you) game. you don't have to be a high roller to get to high stakes tables and nobody will kick you out or censor you unless you're physically violent.
Gg 2 - this means something so that you're really good at gambling/game theory, working the odds, understanding everybody, and reading the room/rules very quickly with just experience or study including the odds of machines or tablez, the rules of any game that sort of thing
Looking at At least 3 Rewards.
1 reward will make it so that the benefit of being a fighter gives you discounts for perks related to martial arts powered fighting or Athletics or body stuff in the future. this increases with each God arm that you have. (Half off. Then half off. then half off) this means you can earn at least three by out and out purchase one and then getting both from Gene and then Azazel. Yeah none of this can only purchase bullshit ruins major motive and part of game.
You can literally add the additional arm onto your body or change your leg into a equally dextrous like gorilla leg foot arm thing.
A maxed out Body Mod
A being the God hand makes me worthy secondary effect...attached to first discounting reward or a perk? People/society may not respect you but universe does. Hence discount and you qualify for any innate trait screening effects (pure of heart, virgin, true warrior, mjolnir) of prestige or worth or protection (fairy law, ward/attack against outsiders) because you are the God hand baby.
Rewards that Grant items or effects that are available in perks or for purchase refund the Choice points if purchased.
The ultimate will be "it's better than a bank".
The basic idea is that it will allow for my idea where you may bank Choice points and get cumulative discounts on previous jumps purchasables as progress on chains by jump that you can only purchase between jumps on something that happened prior.
[Five jumps in while between six and fifth jump
may purchase at half off with any remaining cp perks/items in fifth.
3/4ths off of the fourth jump.
7/8ths the third jump.
15/16ths the second
And finally 1st jump perks at 1/32nd their price.]
If you get two additional rewards to IBTAB
In your Warehouse there will be two gaming machines one to take you to a Gambling Hall the other to the fighting Hall resembling the places in the game. Starts having same machines games and challenges.
The Gambling Hall allows all games of skill / chance that allow for earning/betting that you witness or ask hall to integrate from worlds been part of but once in it doesn't go away. (Ooc Play some free equivalent online or electronic poker or vegas solitaire or whatever use those as your results) You can even summon Companions or any individuals known of to a table machine or floor (or equivalent). this can be against their will but they can leave out door no time passed nor have to participate. there will be a editting effect like with the bar from Anarchy Reigns jump aside from the fact they can spend earnings on body mod/injumpperk/supplement list.
Their currency will be accepted or you can give your currency out your pocket or account or your game points.
Fighting hall: any competitions allowed and can be added to list. Whatever event added will be stocked and staffed by npcs or chosen folks from current jump or contract signers from prior ones.
It has same rewards, freedom, and exit effect but exiters will remember how fought and learned skills and their training stays. damage doesn't linger save as cautious insightful vision understanding or nightmare no more harmful than already endure.
Divide by 10 your earnings and that translates to Choice points that you/ winner can withdraw and use for Body Mods or Warehouse or similar supplements at anytime or the special rates discussed above ONLY BETWEEN JUMPS
in Jumps from now on any money you earn from prize purses or gambling at the moment you collect or receive your reward you'll get the option there by presenter, or a convenient call, or additional special jumpers club form to convert portion of reward at the ÷10 factor for Choice points. Or 100 x that for game points.
The addition will also track your actions and award Game points (1:1 ingame currency rates for casino) for feats equilavent in world that jump is based ons common but not monetary scoring system Fr'ex actions that provide score in mario games, get game points on the machines in mario jumps would be counted before/instead of coins but coins would be counted if only thing counted in that jumps inspiration. in chrono trigger this would be exp before tech points which being scarcer are counted at 5x but not the barter items or gp, Mario and Luigi jump would count xp and no coins. alternatively adds gamepoints for wins at other games or scored events earned in jump as rewarded by officials/ranking translated to equivalent base.
Game points directly usuable and held only in those machines/halls
Once you've converted Choice points to money or game points
or
converted money to Choice Points or Game Points you can't undo it or transfers another.
Game Points can only directly be used to play games / bet in the halls to earn rewards in (chosen before begin play) cp, game points, or local currency [I need a conversion rate for God hand currency to accepted universal standard like gp in d&d U$D or pokedollars] . Remember jumper can only spend cp on full jump perk lists after one jump with banked co but Before choose another (this gain that list options and discounts or additional cp)
One exception jump specific Sub Point systems, such as sometimes used to create powers or ships or vehicles. can do this during selection or injump or right before importing These can be gambled with and supplemented with gamerpoints but you can only withdraw in Sub Point value what you end a full game that has come to it's conclusion and what it would let you take. There's no depositing your Sub Points combining with Game Points and then withdraw the mass. you have to play, risk, complete, and take winnings.
Eta now have a commendable Google doc God Hand reddit/sb
This is the 4/26 update and could still use the commentary and help, am I taking your advice into account? I dropped a whole origin. More frustration and tiredness plus feel covered by Infernal Ally

Whole-History Ratings - My Year-Long Journey to Create an MMA Rating System & a Thankyou to r/MMA

Previous Posts & Full Ratings
This isn't really going to be the usual kind of post I make about the rating system, so if you're here to see any specific data or expecting numbers and charts, I'm sorry to disappoint today! This is the story of how the Whole-History ratings came about and why I'm still working on them today. I've also left thanks to those people who left comments that kept me working on this despite all the failure and changes this project has gone through.
EDIT: If you don’t want to read the whole story, just skip to the last section 🙂

Finding a Problem

It's been over a year since I started my journey to find a more effective ranking or rating system for MMA. I don't know the date that I started working on the project, but my first post about it was back on the 4th of September, 2018. This whole project was inspired by seeing a video on youtube that chronicled the entire history of the UFC rankings for some specific divisions. I noticed that there were a lot of times that rankings changed with no reasonable justification that I could see. I'd only been watching MMA for about a year at that point (thanks to Bisping vs GSP) so there was a lot of discovery to be done.
Being curious about how these rankings were generated, I was quite shocked to see that they were generated through a few individuals voting for who should be in which position. Further investigation showed me that even the most popular unofficial rankings on Tapology were generated by community votes. This seemed naturally wrong to me as those rankings could be easily subject to popularity, exposure and general bias or out-of-cage events.

First Steps

Being a football fan, I'm used to having league tables generated seasonally by awarding 3 points for a win and 1 point for a draw, with goal difference being used to distinguish teams with the same number of points. This was my first idea for implementing a ranking system. I decided to award 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw and then bonus points based on the round that a fight ended, taking the last 5 fights within 2 years to calculate this.
After putting all of this together, building a dataset and creating the first iteration of my rankings website, I proudly posted them here. Inevitably, these rankings got heavily criticised by the community here, pointing out many issues and flaws with what I'd done, plenty of new arrivals to the UFC who were nowhere near being ranked had just as many points as champions and the deeper the division was, the more outlandish the ratings were.
While this was very disheartening to me, having put a lot of work and time into writing this whole system and spending money on hosting for the website, one comment caught my interest, someone mentioned the Elo system to me, which isn't something I'd heard of before or had any knowledge of. For a while, however, I took the site down and ceased work on the ranking system, believing that there was no way I could do anything approaching a reasonable job at making a ranking system.

Needing a Project

At the early point of 2019, I reached the last year of my degree, I'd been working part-time from home on a degree in Computing and IT for 5 years at that point and for the last module, I would be required to plan and produce a project of my choosing and report on it. Struggling to think of what to do, I remembered my pitiful attempt at a ranking system for MMA from months earlier and since there was still no good system I could find, I decided to restart the project and use that for my degree.
Remembering the Elo system mentioned before, I went and investigated it, writing my own implementation of Elo, in some cases adding various modifiers and constantly trying to tweak it to produce reasonably accurate results. While it worked better than the points system I had made before, it also was horribly flawed. If you believe that Donald Cerrone is the best fighter in the world, you might have agreed with it, but I didn't and so I had to continue my journey.
The next thing I looked into was TrueSkill, which is Microsoft's ranking system used for various online games. It's similar to Elo but instead of simply having a single rating value, it would also track a confidence value as well, the more games you play, the less your rating should move because the system would become more confident that it had the correct value for you and If you lost where you were expected to win, your confidence would decrease. This seemed like a possible improvement.
Digging around online led me to find an old abandoned implementation of TrueSkill that I carefully updated and included in my project. This seemed like it was a lot more accurate to me than the Elo system, however, there were still many major issues with it. The obvious one was that while it was easy for someone to climb the rankings early in their career, once they got a strong certainty, it would take a long time for them to drop once they started losing. I still have this system running on the website and even today Fedor Emelianenko is the number 6 ranked fighter in the world pound-for-pound.
At this point, I was starting to get a bit worried overall, both the systems I had looked at had failed me and I was thinking that perhaps I should try to find something else for my final project or even delay it and try again next year.

Discovering Whole-History

Searching around for anything to try and help me achieve my goals, I stumbled across a whitepaper by Rémi Coulom titled 'Whole-History Rating: A Bayesian Rating System for Players of Time-Varying Strength' which I read through. I understood very little of the mathematics that I was looking at, but what I did understand was that this rating system seemed to propose a solution for all of the issues present in the systems I'd tried before.
With Elo and TrueSkill, you store a value or two to represent the rating of each fighter, then, when a new fight happens, you take the ratings of both fighters and the result and it gives you their new values. It's a linear rating system that goes forward in time and would theoretically get more accurate as more fights happen. This isn't how Whole-History works at all.
With Whole-History ratings, you generate everything in one go, you input the data for every fight that has ever happened and then you iterate over that data, generating ratings for every single fight that happened at the same time. With each iteration, the ratings are smoothed out to form what would be a line graph of that fighters estimated skill over time. If you take a fighter on any given day, their rating is influenced not only by the fights that happened before that day, but also all the fights that happened afterwards as well.
The way I like to describe it is that if you were a boxer and you fought and beat Floyd Mayweather in his debut fight, under other rating systems, you'd gain very few points for that win since Floyd would only have a low, default rating. As time goes on and Floyd wins his next 50 fights, in hindsight, your win against him looks far more impressive than it did at the time, but your rating wouldn't change. In Whole-History, your rating will be increased to reflect that your win indicated that you were more skilled than originally assumed.
The same goes the other way around if you are the first person to defeat an undefeated fighter, normal rating systems will reward you greatly for it, but if they then go on to lose their next 10 fights in a row and everyone realises that actually, time caught up with them and they aren't as good anymore, your rating would be reduced to reflect that.

The Work Begins

Once I discovered this rating system, I set about implementing it. I searched around and found an implementation of this rating system on Github that is being used for an online Go website and over the course of a month or so, carefully ported this library into the language that the rest of my project was using and also implemented the ability to have drawn results, something that the original system didn't do at all.
Armed with my new ranking system, on the 2nd of March this year, I posted the ratings and predictions for UFC 235.
The response was not as bad as before, but still very mixed. I was criticised for Walker being given a very low rating, which was simply a result of only having two of his fights in my data and another commenter said that it 'sounds like a system Robin Black would come up with' which I took to mean that it wasn't very good.
As the results for that event came in, I finally felt like I was onto something. The ratings successfully predicted that Usman would beat Woodley, Askren beating Lawler and that Munhoz would beat Garbrandt among other correct predictions. In fact, it correctly predicted 8 of the 12 fights on the card and I posted the next day with my results and some thoughts on why some fights were predicted wrong and what to do next.
I continued posting predictions for the next few events with varying success and to varying responses. I was asked to stop posting by one person because I was apparently 'losing people money' when they were betting on the rating system, something I never asked or told anyone to do. Some cards had really poor predictions, others had more accurate predictions and the biggest factor seemed to be how many of their fights I had in my data. The next step seemed obvious, to try and compile the most complete set of fight history I possibly could.

Expanding The Data

With the first round of testing complete, I went back to my dataset and completely rewrote my data gathering application. This was the biggest task in the entire project and was the point I came closest to abandoning the entire thing.
I wrote multiple processors that would gather all the new results from multiple different sources and store each of them, which worked just fine. The problem though was finding a way to match up the duplicated data in each set and to, at the same time, work out where data was directly contradicting. There were and still are many places that had one person fighting someone at an event and then the other source had them fighting a completely different opponent at the same event.
There was also the issue of nicknames, some places used nicknames in place of real names while others would just use their actual name. Some other people have the same name as each other but are completely different people. This was a massive undertaking and after months, I still don't believe I've been able to get it working perfectly, but it does work and I'm yet to see the same fighter show up twice in my data. I'll save you all the tedious details of exactly how I did it, but it consisted of many late nights and all of the coffee that Cuba has ever produced.
Finally, I set up the website to actually display the results for everyone to see and browse as they want. There are ratings from amateur fighters with only a single fight in obscure promotions all the way up to the very top of the UFC and all of that data is used to calculate the ratings (which is why the fighter records might seem wrong if you look at the site, they include amateur and exhibition fights in the overall record).

Finishing Up

With the rating system now roughly complete save for some minor tweaks here and there, I wrote and submitted my final report in September this year and I'm due to get the results on Monday next week.
The rating system has an overall predictive accuracy of 66% as I've posted before and with the data, I've been able to produce plenty of what I hope are interesting graphs and posts on this subreddit. I plan to continue doing so for as long as people show interest.
The reason I'm making this post isn't just to share how this all came about, but more to thank everyone who left positive and supportive comments along the way, as well as the people who gave me helpful suggestions and made me think about solutions to the problems I was having. I'm not a confident person and I'm very easily dissuaded by negative feedback, so without those comments, I doubt I'd still be working on it today and I certainly wouldn't be paying £70 a month on hosting to keep the rating site running.
I can't thank everyone who has given me support as there's been plenty of comments and discussions outside of my actual posts, but having gone back through all of the previous posts, I'd like to thank u/throwawaybjj44, u/blownclutch3000, u/WonkDog, u/ALAVG, u/BasiPrime37, u/JapanSage, u/creatorsellor, u/PatriotScum, u/iamkingofkings123, u/SteveXmetal, u/czv3, u/weighinsJoannajizz, u/S18P120, u/xyzxyz94, u/RIZIN_Max, u/cambodiadashcam, u/kneeco28, u/branduNe, u/Junesfoshiz, u/Mckenzieajm, u/DiarrheaMonkey-, u/laydowndead, u/ricosuave3355, u/340g and u/2049509468 as all of you have either given me supportive comments, shown interest in this project or made me think about something I need to do differently and it's because of you that I'm still doing this right now. Also, thank you to MMA because without this place I'd have nowhere to share this project in the first place!
The project isn't over, but the first year is! I hope I can keep on improving the ratings next year and keep your interest as well as maybe improve that 66% accuracy to something even better!

UFC Fight Night Rio Rancho Fight Predictions

Hello everyone!
first of all i would like to sincerely apologize for being incredibly late in posting this write up. It was a very busy week and I have been back and forth to the doctors to make sure that I don't have melanoma and all that stuff that comes with being an aussie, so, yeah, a fair few health scares and since skin checks aren't covered by medicare i had to figure out a way to find a bulk billing place, etc etc.
all that sappy bullshit aside, how is everyone? This card is pretty interesting and there's a title contention fight so that's always good.
Lets get the show on the road!
(c) - Champ
(D) - Debut
FLS - Fight Lose Streak
FWS - Fight Win Streak
NS - No Streak
(#x) - Rank in Division
Lets go!
Prelims
Flyweight
Mark De La Rosa (11-3-0, 2 FLS) v Raulian Paiva (18-3-0, 2 FLS) - A tough one to predict since both of these fighters are on the brink of being kicked off the UFC roster. De La Rosa has had a rough time in the UFC, with only one substantial win over Elias Garcia, which happened one and a half years ago. For the record, I don't count the split decision win over Joby to be a significant win. But other than that Rear Naked Choke, there’s nothing huge on his UFC record, other than a fair bunch of losses. He got outperformed by Kai Kara-France, who I have consistently said is a killer, and before that, he lost a devastating decision loss by Alex Perez. All in all it’s not looking too good for De La Rosa. He’s a great wrestler and has decent striking but he hasn’t shown anything worth mentioning. Paiva is new to the UFC and has yet to win a fight in the UFC, despite a fairly close fight against Kai Kara-France. Paiva still hasn’t shown us a whole lot other than his striking ability which is decent. He is a DWCS alumni but one of the few that is yet to show promise. I hope that this time he gets more of a chance to show off his skill.

Women’s Bantamweight
Macy Chiasson (5-1-0, NS) v Shanna Young (D) (7-2-0, NS) - So, this won’t actually be an analytical writeup like with what I typically do, mostly because Young is coming in as a debutant and a very late replacement. As you all know, I love Chiasson, i’ve been a huge fan of Chiasson since her TUF days and unlike her original opponent, Montano, Chiasson actually fights. Now, i’m not saying Montano is a bad fighter, she went to absolute war against Modafferi, but she’s no champ. She had no championship fight and I hate how she’s “ex-champ” now, no, she never was champ, just because you hold a title doesn’t mean you represent the title. Anyway, Chiasson no doubt has this one in the bag, she was on a mean finish streak before losing to Lansberg, I still don’t know why she lost that one, she didn’t seem to know what to do. Anyway, Chiasson all the way.
Chiasson via KO R2
Bantamweight
Casey Kenney (13-1-1, 6 FWS) v Merab Dvalishvili (9-4-0, 2 FWS) - This is a fun fight. Despite “winning” against Borg (he didn’t really win, it was a fucking bullshit decision), Kenney is very good on his feet, he has incredibly fast kicks and his dexterity in his hips allow him to switch stance and launch a head kick that is incredibly accurate. I am unsure about his takedown defence, I am aware that he suffered in that area greatly in his fight against Borg and he showed some difficulty grappling and rolling with the very experienced submission artist in Bermudez. Kenney’s main weapon by far is his left kicks, they’re fast and dangerous and he needs to utilize them more and maybe get some more takedown defence. Dvalishvili is a dangerous wrestler, with 7 years of Judo and Sambo, there’s no doubt in the world that he would only stick with striking. He’s a grappler at heart and his style is to grind out his opponent. For the casuals out there, he’s the Bantamweight Khabib, plain and simple. Whatever you see in Khabib, you’ll see in Dvalishvili. The only difference is that Khabib does the majority of his takedowns on the outer edge of the Octagon, or even up against the cage, Dvalishvili does it wherever the fuck he wants. This particular style can spell trouble for Kenney who isn’t amazing at defending any takedown, and when you’re trained in the arts of planting your opponent on his arse, then you’ll be fine against someone who doesn’t succeed on the ground. I am slightly conflicted on this fight, if the fight stays on the feet then Kenney has this, but if Kenney isn’t ready for the takedowns then it’s Dvalishvili all the way.
Dvalishvili via UD
Light Heavyweight
Devin Clark (10-4-0, NS) v Dequan Townsend (21-10-0, 2 FLS) - Before i start, can we just tip our hats and pay our respects to Townsend? That dude lost 3 weeks ago and he is back for more, he’s on a two fight losing streak and he’s still hungry for that victory. That’s admirable, what a guy. Clark is a very tough wrestler who isn’t at all flashy or exciting, unless you love to see a guy get taken down and smashed, in which case he’s pretty exciting. Clark is your standard MMA wrestler, he’ll take your down, then ground and pound and adjust position for the rest of the round, repeat for all 3 rounds. That’s as basic as you can get, but sometimes being basic is all you need, look at Khabib, the most basic fighter in the UFC, but what he excels at, he really, really, really excels at, uncomparable to the rest of the roster. Clark isn’t Khabib though and he has been defeated by submissions and he has been outstruck by far better strikers. He still has a tonne of room to improve and I can’t wait to see that improvement. Townsend is on a fairly bad downward slope and his recent performance against Bevon Lewis just proved that he’s not yet ready for tougher competition. I’m still pretty astonished he’s fighting again. He didn’t sustain any major damage in his fight against Lewis but is 3 weeks enough to train against an opponent? I personally don’t think so. The best bet at the moment is to go with Clark via UD, because Clark isn’t a finisher (last finish was in 2014), his style is heavily focused on grinding the fight out and controlling the ground game of his opponent, and Townsend doesn’t necessarily have a developed ground game, so, yeah...
Clark via UD
Lightweight
Scott Holtzman (13-3-0, NS) v Jim Miller (31-13-0, 2 FWS) - This is a great match up. Holtzman is such an excellent, well rounded striker who has a right hand from the deepest depths of hades, he throws with absolute power and he can be pretty technical about it. In his fight against Ma, he obliterated Ma’s left eye, It kinda looked like a frog that does that strange puffing up thing they do, that was basically Ma’s eye at the end of the second, Holtzman displayed ruthless aggression and near pinpoint accuracy even when brawling. That right hand is going to be an issue for Miller because Miller doesn’t necessarily do well on the feet and really does excel on the ground. Miller is a long time veteran, right next to Cerrone, and boy has he been in absolute fights. He was on a fairly bad 4 FLS in 2017 and early 2018 but he has made somewhat of a turn around with wins over Guida and Jason Gonzales. Miller is a very well rounded, incredibly tough and durable fighter who doesn’t have much technique and weaponry when it comes to the striking department, but once things hit the ground he unleashes the beast and masterfully controls the fight. Now, whether or not Holtzman will let him control the ground is a different story, Holtzman is an absolute powerhouse and stronger fighter who can perhaps sprawl his way up from Millers takedowns, so this is definitely a tough fight for Miller. I can see Holtzman getting the upper hand on the feet and I firmly believe that it will end within the first 2 rounds with Holtzman being the victor.
Holtzman via KO R2
Bantamweight
John Dodson (#12) (20-11-0, 2 FLS) v Nathaniel Wood (16-3-0, 8 FWS) - I’m pretty hype to see Wood fight again. Dodson is the most filler fighter there is right now. I just don’t think he can keep up with the modern day fighters anymore, we saw him struggle against Yan and Rivera, and he hasn’t really adapted well to the younger fighters, and Nathaniel Wood is definitely someone you really need to adapt your game to. Wood is the highlight of this fight, he is 3-0 in the UFC, with all 3 ending in a submission, this dude is a serious submission artist and a prospect in the heavily talented Bantamweight Division. Wood is the only england MMA fighter in the UFC that really has a chance to make it big, he’s got the weapons, he’s got the skill on the ground and god dammit he’s going to be a contender in a couple of years, heed my words.
Wood via Sub R2
Welterweight
Tim Means (29-11-1, NS) v Daniel Rodriguez (D) (10-1-0, 6 FWS) - I’m not sure what to think about this but I think the spotlight here is on the debutant. Means is a veteran of the sport and a well known name to the MMA community, he has been around since 2004 and has always put on entertaining fights. He hasn’t really gone far with his career though but he always returns to fight another day. He is very well rounded but has a heavy focus on his wild boxing, he carries a whole lot of power and whilst not technical, his flurry of punches can land with great impact. 19 of his 29 wins are from knockouts, with his most recent knockout being against Rainey. However he seems to be facing younger and more technically sound fighters, with proper training. Rodriguez is a name im very unfamiliar with, which doesn’t surprise me because I say that with every newcomer. I just don’t know much about him and this will purely be an educational fighter for me, a big ol’ question mark. I’ll have to go with what i know, and what I know is that Means has been around for a longer time than Rodriguez, and sometimes experience matters. So, don’t kill me with this pick.
Means via KO R2
Main Card
Lightweight
Yancy Medeiros (15-6-0, 2 FLS) v Lando Vannata (10-4-2, NS) - An exciting fight to start the Main Card. Medeiros has been away for a year and we’ve all been patiently waiting for his return. Medeiros has almost always been a highlight finisher, he’s very good on the ground and his boxing is very clean. He did however suffer a heavy loss against Gillespie, only landing one strike throughout the fight. I feel like his prior rib injury might have hindered his ability to escape the position he was in during the Gillespie fight, but regardless, Medeiros is an animal who has displayed such incredible skill during his last win streak. His vicious, violent onslaught against Oliveira… That headkick followed by a nice slick back take to a RNC against Spencer, and a very quick TKO against Silva. This guy is impressive and I sure he bounced back from his last two rough defeats. Vannata is someone who i consistently claim to be a great fighter. His record as of late might not show that he’s a highly talented fighter, but once you see him in action in the Octagon you’ll change your mind, Vannata is a crazy dude, he’s very hard to read and he will throw anything he wants with no care in the world, he’s an entertainer at heart and that shows in every bout. He’s not highly technical but his ability to overwhelm and confuse his opponents with his unorthodox techniques are definitely something you cannot miss. I like Vannata and I have yet to go against him, but this time around, I feel like Medeiros is better than ever and he’ll be able to handle Vannata’s wacky style.
Medeiros via UD
Lightweight
Brok Weaver (D) (14-4-0, 8 FWS) v Rodrigo Vargas (11-3-0, NS) - This is one of those fights where I might as well say it’s going to be an educational bout. Weaver is a name ive heard almost every pundit talk about, his background, his fighting experience, all at a young age. I personally haven’t seen any of his fights yet (mostly due to time constraints) and this will be my first time watching him so I expect nothing more than greatness considering how much i’ve heard about him. As for his opponent Vargas, he only has one fight in the UFC and from what I remember he got outclassed by his opponent. So he’ll be treated as a debutant, even though he isn’t. So, yeah, i’m gonna have to go by word of mouth here and say Weaver has this.
Weaver via UD
Flyweight
Ray Borg (12-4-0, NS) v Rogerio Bontorin (#9) (16-1-0, 4 FWS) - I don’t know why Borg isn’t ranked in the top 5 considering he “recently” fought for the title. Borg is one of the best wrestlers in the Flyweight division at the moment, he’s nigh unstoppable when it comes to his takedowns, and his numerous slams against Kenney proves that. Borg has been through a terrible personal battle with his sons health issues, and his own, and i honestly feel sorry for the guy. I don’t want to play favourites here but I still think Borg has this. Bontorin was a part of the Flyweight mess where the UFC had no idea what the fuck to do with the Division, hence why he is ranked 9 instead of say, 29. The UFC kicked out a whole lot of people in the Flyweight division over the last year and this is why Bontorin slipped my mind when I saw him ranked 9. So, yeah, for the readers out there, Bontorin only has 2 fights in the UFC, and whilst he won those two fights, he isn’t a veteran and he is still fairly new to the UFC. With that said, Bontorin did have a Doctor Stoppage win over Paiva, but that’s about as far as my care went for this guy. In my eyes he’s still new to the UFC, regardless of the rank.
Borg via UD
Flyweight
Montana De La Rosa (#15) (10-5-0, NS) v Mara Romero Borella (12-6-0, NS) - The De La Rosa’s are taking over this event! DLR has shown us her ability to submit people with absolute ease. Granted, she did submit absolute horrible fighters, but they’re submissions on the record regardless. DLR is very well rounded with somewhat clean strikes but an even cleaner grappling game, once she takes her opponents to the ground, she has them right where she wants them and the game is over. Ironic because she’s from “Team Takedown” (According to Tapology). Anyway, this isn’t a high stakes fight, it’s just a normal fight between contenders who wouldn’t have a chance at the belt. I apologise, still riding a high from that Shevchenko v Chookagian fight. Borella is a very forgotten name, I don’t know why because she’s a rare italian in the UFC. There’s not much to talk about when it comes to Borella. I don’t really tune into her fights, and I’m really only tuning into this one just for the sake of watching her lose to Montana.
Montana via UD
Co-Main
Welterweight
Diego Sanchez (29-12-0, NS) v Michel Pereira (23-10-0, NS) - This is a crazy fight guys. Sanchez has been around since the very first TUF and since his debut he has only lost 12 times, now, that might seem like a lot, but he has lost to absolute killers of their generation. Koscheck, Fitch, Penn, Hathaway, Ellenberger, Melendez, Jury, Lamas, Lauzon, Iaquinta, Brown, and Chiesa. There are zero slouches in that list. Sanchez is as hungry now as he was 15 years ago. Sanchez is very well rounded, very experienced and he’s ready to maybe go to sleep when he fights the Truck with Wings in Pereira. Sanchez is getting old so i’m not exactly sure if he’s got what it takes to take on fresh talent. Pereira is what happens when you make a UFC character in a video game with nothing but pure muscle and flippy shit. Pereira is a mad man, he has no style other than wow the crowd. He’s a crowd pleaser and a highlight maker. BUT we have seen one major issue that will most likely be exploited, it’s his cardio… We saw a significant, significant decrease in his energy in round 2 and 3 of his last bout. Granted he did spend 5 minutes jumping over invisible couches and chairs, and I don’t think he’ll do that this time, but still if its a habit then he’ll do it. I sincerely hope for the longevity of his career that he has a different game plan because man does this guy have incredible power in his hands. He’s a force of nature and has incredibly knockout power. Is Sanchez ready for it though? He certainly has the experience and has faced some dangerous strikers before, but who knows what Pereira is on (I am very curious to see if he pops for something this year).
Pereira via KO R1
Main Event
Light Heavyweight
Corey Anderson (#5) (13-4-0, 4 FWS) v Jan Blachowicz (#6) (25-8-0, 2 FWS) - An interesting match up, not exactly a good match up, but an interesting match up. Anderson has taken over the Walker hype train following his savage knockout against the man himself, Walker. Anderson has insane power in his hands and he’s incredibly fast for a Light Heavyweight. His only set back recently was against OSP but since then has bounced back in glorious fashion. With huge wins over Teixeira, Cummins, Latifi and Walker, he has risen to title contention and there’s no better time since Jones has effectively ran out of opponents to fight in the division. Anderson is no doubt the next in line and will eventually face Jones, but for now he’s got a kinda dangerous fighter in front of him. Blachowicz last win was against Rockhold where he defeated him in spectacular fashion, and since then has been in a small sparring match against Souza, and whilst there were apparently judges there that scored the fight a split decision, I guess that gave him enough traction to fight someone who derailed a hype train so… yay? Let's be real here for a second, no one liked that fight against Souza, it was a boring tappy tappy fight that made the crowd more quiet than a funeral. Why the fuck he’s fighting Anderson i have zero idea. Where’s Smith? Where’s Santos? Where are the interesting challenges? I don’t like this match up one bit and you bet your ass I'm backing my boy Anderson in this bout.
Anderson via KO R2

Best New Jersey Sportsbooks Apps

When it comes to online sports betting regulation, the USA is still on its infancy. On May 2018, the Supreme Court opened the way for states to pave their own legislation regarding sports betting offers.
New Jersey was one of the first states to apply legislation on this matter, having 16 websites offering and accepting online sports wagers. Many of the websites also have Apps available so players can download them onto their devices and use them while on the go.

What to Expect from a Sportsbook App

In order to legally function in the state of New Jersey, online sportsbooks need to be licensed by the Division of Gaming Enforcement (DGE). The first step players who want to go mobile must take is, therefore, to find a fully licenced site and beware of the - still - many unregulated bookies operating on the market.
Ever since sports betting became legal in the Garden State, a huge percentage of all the money legally gambled was done either online or on mobile. Whether wagering on NBA or NFL events, Hockey or even MMA, a look at the growing list of NJ Sportsbooks Apps available in Gamble USA can show that New Jersey already has plenty of variety to choose from.

888sport, along with its sister sites 888casino and 888poker, belongs to 888 Holdings and offers an App fit for both Android and iOS.
This sportsbook has lots of options when it comes to betting, like Tennis, Nascar, English Premier League, Basketball, Bowling or all the major US leagues. It has around 3547 markets available and a great Welcome Bonus. Players who register get a risk-free bet of up to $500. This means that 888sport will give back the money of the lost bets made with the first deposit.
The sportsbook offers 24/7 customer support by email, phone and live chat and lots of payment options, from the traditional credit and debit cards to modern e-wallet solutions like Skrill or Neteller.

Draftkings is already a household name when it comes to sports betting. With roots on fantasy sports, this established company has over 10 million registered users worldwide and offers a sign-up bonus of up to $1000, made of a deposit bonus and a first bet match of $500 each.
The sportsbook app is quick to install and offers a great array of wagering chances, be it on Motorsports, Darts, Golf or Boxing. It’s available for both Android and iOS and can be contacted via live chat or email in case any issue occurs during gameplay.
When it comes to payment methods, Draftkings options are a bit limited, only having the traditional debit and credit cards and Paypal.

PointsBet is an Australian product introduced in 2019, offering dynamic betting to New Jersey sportsbook fans. The sportsbook offers a great welcome package comprised of 2 risk-free bets, each offering a $500 cashback.
The app is available for both Android and iOS and the markets on offer include soccer, darts, motorsports and even Aussie football. It also has a really good choice for NFL and NBA sports wagering and lots of betting features.
Customer support is available 24/7 and can be contacted via email, live chat and phone. Banking options, however, are not that much, with e-checks, credit and debit cards, online banking and PointsBet prepaid card available.

One of the biggest operators in the world, William Hill has been a household name for many years and almost a synonym for betting. With a long history in brick and mortars, William Hill made a transition to mobile and now also has an app taking New Jersey players by storm.
The app is available both in Android and iOS and has great wagering opportunities and features. With a responsive design, the platform offers sports betting in markets such as Hockey, Football, Golf or Baseball and lots of bet types.
The support is available 24/7 by phone, email and live chat. Banking options are a bit limited, though. Players can deposit funds via e-check, credit and debit cards, William Hill prepaid card and even visit a William Hill location in NJ. Withdrawals are a bit more tricky, as right now, they’re only available via prepaid card or on location.

Conclusion

No matter the choice of Sportsbook App, players need to bear in mind some issues before downloading any of it and start enjoying some sports wagering. Gambling in New Jersey can only be done if players are located within the borders of the state, even when playing on mobile.
Android users must also beware that Google Play does not allow any money wagering and gambling apps in the App Store in the USA. This means that Android users need to download the apps, when available, directly from the websites by following the instructions normally available.
